100 Quotes About Health

Back in January I did a post with 100 Motivational Quotes To Start 2016. I enjoyed making that post so I thought I’d make another quote filled post. Below is 100 quotes related to health.

Warning: some of these posts may be triggering to people who don’t like hearing about animal cruelty! I warned y’all so don’t get mad at me.

A fit, healthy bodyβ€”that is the best fashion statement.
― Jess C. Scott

― Markus Herz

― Kurt Vonnegut

According to the surgeon general, obesity today is officially an epidemic; it is arguably the most pressing public health problem we face, costing the health care system an estimated $90 billion a year. Three of every five Americans are overweight; one of every five is obese. The disease formerly known as adult-onset diabetes has had to be renamed Type II diabetes since it now occurs so frequently in children. A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association predicts that a child born in 2000 has a one-in-three chance of developing diabetes. (An African American child’s chances are two in five.) Because of diabetes and all the other health problems that accompany obesity, today’s children may turn out to be the first generation of Americans whose life expectancy will actually be shorter than that of their parents. The problem is not limited to America: The United Nations reported that in 2000 the number of people suffering from overnutrition–a billion–had officially surpassed the number suffering from malnutrition–800 million.
― Michael Pollan

May your heart be lighter today.
― Harley King

I don’t understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced, vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open.
― Dean Ornish

Would it not be better if they spent more money on wholesome things like oranges and wholemeal bread or if they even, like the writer of the letter to the New Statesman, saved on fuel and ate their carrots raw? Yes, it would, but the point is that no ordinary human being is ever going to do such a thing. The ordinary human being would sooner starve than live on brown bread and raw carrots. And the peculiar evil is this, that the less money you have, the less inclined you feel to spend it on wholesome food. A millionaire may enjoy breakfasting off orange juice and Ryvita biscuits; an unemployed man doesn’t. Here the tendency of which I spoke at the end of the last chapter comes into play. When you are unemployed, which is to say when you are underfed, harassed, bored, and miserable, you don’t want to eat dull wholesome food. You want something a little bit ‘tasty’. There is always some cheaply pleasant thing to tempt you.
― George Orwell

The first sure symptom of a mind in health Is rest of heart and pleasure felt at home.
― Edward Young

Sometimes you have to get sicker before you can get better.
― Jeannette Walls

When our emotional health is in a bad state, so is our level of self-esteem. We have to slow down and deal with what is troubling us, so that we can enjoy the simple joy of being happy and at peace with ourselves.
― Jess C. Scott

― Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

We should never present flesh as somehow morally distinguishable from dairy. To the extent it is morally wrong to eat flesh, it is as morally wrong β€” and possibly more morally wrong β€” to consume dairy.
― Gary L. Francione

My own prescription for health is less paperwork and more running barefoot through the grass.
― Leslie Grimutter

The center [of the supermarket] is for boxed, frozen, processed, made-to-sit-on-your-shelf-for-months food. You have to ask yourself, “If this food is designed to sit in a box for month and months, what is it doing inside my body?” Nothing good, that’s for sure.
― Morgan Spurlock

Any serious social, political, and economic change must include veganism.
― Gary L. Francione

And dieting, I discovered, was another form of disordered eating, just as anorexia and bulimia similarly disrupt the natural order of eating. “Ordered” eating is the practice of eating when you are hungry and ceasing to eat when your brain sends the signal that your stomach is full. … All people who live their lives on a diet are suffering. If you can accept your natural body weight and not force it to beneath your body’s natural, healthy weight, then you can live your life free of dieting, of restriction, of feeling guilty every time you eat a slice of your kid’s birthday cake.
― Portia de Rossi

Appetite has really become an artificial and abnormal thing, having taken the place of true hunger, which alone is natural. The one is a sign of bondage but the other, of freedom.
― Paul Brunton

What some call health, if purchased by perpetual anxiety about diet, isn’t much better than tedious disease.
― George Dennison Prentice

If there had been an exercise I’d liked, would I have gotten this big in the first place?
― Jennifer Weiner

That’s the point. This healthy-feeling time now just feels like a tease. Like I’m in this holding pattern, flying in smooth circles within sight of the airport, in super-comfortable first class. But I can’t enjoy the in-flight movie or free chocolate chip cookies because I know that before the airport is able to make room for us, the plane is going to run out of fuel, and we’re going to crash-land into a fiery, agonizing death.
― Jessica Verdi

The most poetical thing in the world is not being sick.
― G.K. Chesterton

If your leg is in a cast, it’s really dumb to sit in front of your computer doing unnecessary stuff with it hanging down. Your leg will swell and heal slower, if at all. When you go to your doctor, he/she will give you one of those “you’re really dumb and self destructive” looks. Also, “Why didn’t you follow my orders and rest?” Your doctor will be right, and so will mine at my next office visit. Elevate, folk! Elevate your mind, your soul, and your leg, in the order needed!
― Sandy Nathan,

The doctor of the future will be oneself.
― Albert Schweitzer

About eighty percent of the food on shelves of supermarkets today didn’t exist 100 years ago.

― Allan Lokos

If you don’t take care of this the most magnificent machine that you will ever be given…where are you going to live?
― Karyn Calabrese

If you walked into your local convenience store and bought a package of cigars, you would notice that it carries a label warning of the potential dangers of cigar smoke. Yet research suggests that cigar smoking poses a hazard only to moderate to heavy cigar smokers, who comprise less than 1 percent of the adult population. More than 97 percent of American adults, however, eat animal foods, and despite much research demonstrating the connection between the consumption of animal products and disease, we are not warned of these dangers.
― Melanie Joy

The laboratory evidence that carbohydrate-rich diets can cause the body to reain water and so raise blood pressure, just as salt consumption is supposed to do, dates back well over a century.
― Gary Taubes

It is your brain that decides to get you out of bed in the morning to exercise, toΒ give you a stronger, leaner body, or to cause you to hit the snooze button andΒ procrastinate your workout. It is your brain that pushes you away from the table tellingΒ you that you have had enough, or that gives you permission to have the second bowl ofΒ Rocky Road ice cream, making you look and feel like a blob. It is your brain thatΒ manages the stress in your life and relaxes you so that you look vibrant, or, when leftΒ unchecked, sends stress signals to the rest of your body and wrinkles your skin. And it isΒ your brain that turns away cigarettes, too much caffeine, and alcohol, helping you lookΒ and feel healthy, or that gives you permission to smoke, to have that third cup of coffee,Β or to drink that third glass of wine, thus making every system in your body look and feelΒ older.Your brain is the command and control center of your body. If you want a betterΒ body, the first place to ALWAYS start is by having a better brain.
― Daniel G. Amen

When I came out of anesthesia, I wanted two things: my husband and my dog. They wouldn’t let the dog in the recovery room.

If I told you to wish for good health, you would think I’m ridiculous; but when I exchange the word “wish” for the word “pray”, you believe it can work. That is the disempowering delusion religions have brought us.
― Steve Maraboli

― Teri Reynolds

A little chocolate a day keeps the doctor at bay.

Before asserting a prognosis on any patient, always be objective and never subjective. For telling a man that he will win the treasure of life, but then later discovering that he will lose, will harm him more than by telling him that he may lose, but then he wins.”
― Suzy Kassem

We cut the throat of a calf and hang it up by the heels to bleed to death so that our veal cutlet may be white; we nail geese to a board and cram them with food because we like the taste of liver disease; we tear birds to pieces to decorate our women’s hats; we mutilate domestic animals for no reason at all except to follow an instinctively cruel fashion; and we connive at the most abominable tortures in the hope of discovering some magical cure for our own diseases by them.

Meditation is the ultimate mobile device; you can use it anywhere, anytime, unobtrusively.
― Sharon Salzberg

I read once that you need two things to be happy: any two of health, money, and love. You can cover the absense of one with the other two… But now I realized this was unmitigated bullshit, because health and money did not compare with love at all.

When you got a condition, it’s bad to forget your medicine.
― Frank Miller

I am opposed to animal welfare campaigns for two reasons. First, if animal use cannot be morally justified, then we ought to be clear about that, and advocate for no use. Although rape and child molestation are ubiquitous, we do not have campaigns for β€œhumane” rape or β€œhumane” child molestation. We condemn it all. We should do the same with respect to animal exploitation.

Second, animal welfare reform does not provide significant protection for animal interests. Animals are chattel property; they are economic commodities. Given this status and the reality of markets, the level of protection provided by animal welfare will generally be limited to what promotes efficient exploitation. That is, we will protect animal interests to the extent that it provides an economic benefit.
― Gary L. Francione

It is in the balancing of your spirituality with your humanity that you will find immeasurable happiness, success, good health, and love.

The fact is that Chinese parents can do things that would seem unimaginable-even legally actionable-to Westerners. Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, “Hey fatty-lose some weight.” By contrast, Western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking in terms of “health” and never ever mentioning the f-word, and their kids still end up in therapy for eating disorders and negative self image.

― Drew Carey

Weight (too much or too little) is a by-product. Weight is what happens when you use food to flatten your life. Even with aching joints, it’s not about food. Even with arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure. It’s about your desire to flatten your life. It’s about the fact that you’ve given up without saying so. It’s about your belief that it’s not possible to live any other way — and you’re using food to act that out without ever having to admit it.

A person who is headstrong enough to open their eyes and their heart to the full depth and weight of the world is inviting in everything out there – both evil and good, both dark and light, and the sheer bravery of that openness enables them to gain profound insight into the human condition. …compulsive eating is basically a refusal to be fully alive. No matter what we weigh, those of us who are compulsive eaters have anorexia of the soul. We refuse to take in what sustains us. We live lives of deprivation. And when we can’t stand it any longer, we binge. The way we are able to accomplish all of this is by the simple act of bolting — of leaving ourselves — hundreds of times a day.
― Geneen Roth

Each patient carries his own doctor inside him.
― Norman Cousins

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they’ll ease
Your will they’ll mend
And charge you not a shilling.

I never touch sugar, cheese, bread…
I only like what I’m allowed to like. I’m beyond temptation. There is no weakness. When I see tons of food in the studio, for us and for everybody, for me it’s as if this stuff was made out of plastic. The idea doesn’t even enter my mind that a human being could put that into their mouth. I’m like the animals in the forest. They don’t touch what they cannot eat.
